Parent Post-Mock Script

The first conversation after a disappointing mock decides the week. This gives you the words — you're the coach here, not the marker.

Role Coach, not teacher Tier Basic (free) Posture Weekly visibility, never surveillance
First · Timing

Not on the day the result lands

Same-day conversations happen with the mock still raw. Wait at least a day; within the week is ideal — the same rule your child is following with the paper itself (Asset 1).

Day one is for cooling off, not talking marks. Holding the "no grade talk today" house rule is the most useful thing you'll do all week.

Open the door, don't grade the result

Say

  • "When you're ready, I'd like to hear how it went."
  • "What's the plan for this week?"
  • "That's a smart way to work through it."
  • "What's one thing you'd do differently?"
  • "I'm not marking this — the sheet does that."

Avoid

  • "What did you get?"
  • "Did you even revise?"
  • "Your sister never had this trouble."
  • "You're so clever — what happened?"
  • "We'll get you more tutoring."
Praise the process, not the person. "You worked through that carefully" builds a habit. "You're so clever" raises the stakes on the next result.

One line keeps the door open

Any of these can happen. Tap the one you're bracing for — each has a single line. You don't need a speech.

Say"That's fine. No paper talk today. The offer's open whenever you're ready."
Say"Could be. Let's find the bits that were in your control — that's where the plan starts."
Say"This mock measured last month's system, not you. Take the evening. We'll build the plan tomorrow."
Say"You don't have to care right now. Ten minutes on the Analysis sheet, then you're done for today."

Your job ends here

The marks conversation isn't yours

You open the door and hold the posture. The Mock Paper Analysis sheet (Asset 3) does the marks conversation — you don't have to. Ask about the plan, not the score.

That's the coach's posture. You held the timing, opened the door, and handed the marks to the sheet. That's the whole job — and it's the hardest one to get right.
This handles the first conversation. When you want to sit down and work through the whole paper together — a guided 45–60 minute paper audit, step by step — that's the full Reset Conversation Script in Pro. The Reset fixes this mock; Pro prevents the next one.
